I can’t find any photos but I messed up once drilling the crud out and the drill wandered off into the gearcase. It left an opening about a half inch long inside the gear cavity. With no replacement on hand, I finished clearing out the crud to clear the drain passage and then slipped a short piece of brass tubing down to fill in the gash and then covered it with Marine Tex epoxy to seal it. It worked and is still working to this day I think. The only problem is I can’t remember which motor I did this to.

Your post has reminded me to check mine as the lower unit is currently off.
        Yes it’s clogged.
Is the passage a straight 90 degrees?

I believe the passage is straight down from the top, but
the turn at the bottom where it exit’s the case, comes
        out at an angle.
I played with that stuck piece more this morning for a little
while before the wife got up. I still haven’t got it to budge.
Wife has been cracking the whip to keep me working
on the bathroom remodeling……. hope she sleeps
        later tomorrow!

“I’d love to get that piece of metal out in “one piece” to see if I could ID it,
but I would not count on it.”

Buc, It almost looks like a shift rod lever clip with the tab turned up. With the hole in the center if you can get down there with the thinner style dental pick or a straightened paper clip with a hook in the end you may be able to rotate it just enough to catch the hole and pull it free.

Think Steve D nailed it – sure looks like a shift rod clip.

Will an offset/90 degree pick work to hook it out of there? I tried one time to clear out this passage on a 40hp but gave up fearing I would blast into the gearcase oil cavity…

One end of my pick has a twist and bend on the end…… not exactly a 90,
but I hooked it many times and pulled fairly good with a vise grips…….
it eventually slips off…… can’t believe I haven’t broke the pick yet.
                Clip hasn’t even wiggled yet.

I poured some LCR (lime / calcium / rust) removed in the cavity this morning,
and checked a while ago…… not one drop has came out the drain hole, lol.

Steve, after looking at your photo, I’m 99% sure you’ve “nail it”.
                Will try again tomorrow!

I finally got the shift rod clip out of the exhaust cavity drain this morning.
Pecked away for quite a while with a pick, screw driver, hammer, etc.,
trying to scrap away “cement” from around the clip. Finally got it to
wiggle some and was able to snag it out with a hooked wire.
I used a stiff wire, semi-sharpened in a drill to slowly ream out the cement
out of the drain passage. Good to go now!

                      Buc,

I’m soaking mine with PB Blaster but so far not a drip. I can’t see the passage from inside, I assume it was in the area under your clip. How large is the diameter of the passage there?

I soaked mine all night with LCR remover and not a drop got thru either.
Yes, the passage was under the clip. It’s about an 1/8″ diameter, maybe
                        a tad bigger.
