So got oil all over the points and I see they call it a "slinger" well, it did its job, but I can’t have oil on the points so with a new slinger on the bench here..how in tarnations do ya get the old one out? I am sure it is easy, especially ifin ya did it before, but that would not be me, so open to advice..

      Thanks

Now using the search function here I see that it may just be from running as these "slingers" are effective but not perfect. Subject motors slinger appears to be on the crank and not about to move, so I will clean up the mag and reset the points using the proper timing tool and an Aircraft Spruce Induction timing light. I have used this set up before and WOW what a difference…

        Cheers

The slinger does exactly what it says–slings the oil off the shaft. But there is much more to the story. After is is slung off, where does it go? Well, the "where" is it is sucked back down to the intake manifold for re-cycling. There are passages in the crankcase casting for that oil return.

No, the system is not perfect, but it is very amazing that it works at all. In fact, it works very well, and was used on tons of motors, even as large as the 12hp Gales.

As long as the passages are clear, or some jackal didn’t use the wrong gasket, blocking the passageway!

I find that a lot on the 18hps, there are many variations of intake manifold gaskets, and previous owners always seem to use the wrong one.

OK, the slinger has done its job for 59 years, right?

Why not clean up the mag plate, do the normal maintenance and check it again in say, 29 years?
I’ll be long gone but I’ll bet you that original slinger will still be doing its job it was designed to do. No need to replace it.

You may have misunderstood me, I did just that, cleaned it up, reset the points, nice fat blue spark…all is well in the White House 🙂
