I have a 1957 Johnson 7.5 hp. When I pump the tank to start a cold engine it won’t start. It seems like it isn’t getting any gas from the tank. I squirt a little gas or starting fluid into the carb, it starts and runs great! I believe the issue is with the tank or hose? Any help would be appreciated!

If you haven’t already I would disconnect the fuel line at the carb and pump the plunger on the tank…..this will verify fuel flow from the plunger.

If no flow…..then you need to examine the plunger/pump parts in the tank assembly.  There are parts diagrams available.  Most likely the parts manual for your particular engine has a page for the tank parts.

Air and fuel hoses between tank and fuel connector swapped?

Depress check valve in fuel side of connector and push primer button on tank.  Does fuel squirt out?  It should.

Float valve needle in the carb could be gummed up and stuck in the closed position.

does it start up when warm or do you see the same problem?
