Hi All,
I am after the “definitive” resource for work on this outboard. I have been told there were not model specific manuals at this time as the models were pretty similar across the range and years. I am aware of the aftermarket omnibus style manuals covering every model for a decade or more. These seem to have been published possibly decades after the manufacture of the actual outboard. I am after a contemporary service manual from the manufacturer. I have been told there is an OMC “red book” manual that covers perhaps from the 1930s to early 1960s. I am unfamiliar with “red book” manuals but I believe them to be OMCs in house published service manuals.
I am due to do a tear down and rebuild and while capable of the work, a reference with torque specs, tolerances, clearances, backlash, etc, and info regarding jetting for altitude would be very helpful.
Any information, publisher document numbers, links etc greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Nooge.

September 4, 2025 at 10:13 pm #299638The (Red Book) is the Johnson tenth edition shop manual. I have bought several off of eBay. Some people on eBay want an arm and leg for one (about $80 dollars or more) but I have bought several in good condition for less than $30. You just have to catch one at a good time.

a lot of the book info applies to cousins Evinrude

Your 35 Javelin has high and low speed carb adjustment knobs, so there is no “Jetting” for altitude. Just get it idling good with the low speed carb needle, and then, at wide open throttle on a boat, adjust the high speed carb knob for highest RPM “sweet spot”, which can vary with altitude, and you will be able to hear when it’s at optimum high setting — no need for a tach.
Your gas/oil mix is 24 to 1. Use ethanol-free gas if you can get it.
