A friend of mine in Ohio has a 57′ Johnson 35 HP that is going to need some work ( coils, points, condensers, Impeller, and some Seals + Carb rebuild.) He says when he starts it up it puts a lot of Fuel in the lake ( Big Rainbow ) Are we talking Worn Lower Crank Seal ? Any help appreciated.
April 8, 2021 at 8:19 pm #235949what is a lot of fuel ?? all normally unburnt fuel and oil make a nice rainbow sheen anytime
how doe the motor perform…?

April 8, 2021 at 8:19 pm #235950Those motors weren’t designed to be environmentally friendly, a rainbow behind them is normal especially when idling in one spot for a little bit. The crankcase has a built in puddle valve that empties excess fuel buildup out the exhaust. If an obnoxiously large rainbow is forming then look for obvious leaks, I don’t believe a crank seal sees that much fuel mix to be an issue, especially on a running motor. A very common issue I’ve seen with these motors is fuel pouring back out of the carb for various reasons but especially when starting and becoming flooded from over choking the motor. Check all the fuel line connections and fuel line connector for leaks as well. From what you describe it sounds like normal operation or a leak somewhere but pictures would tell the tale.

April 8, 2021 at 8:32 pm #235951I have not seen the motor yet. Just trying to figure the Rainbow issue in the water. I will check and replace all the hoses and connections & Overhaul the Carb. Thanks for the swift Reply. jr
April 8, 2021 at 8:59 pm #235953Starting a cold engine usually means unburnt fuel goes out the exhaust…. over-choking the engine or the fact that a cold engine will be less efficient at burning all fuel in the cyclinder(s).

April 8, 2021 at 9:17 pm #235954across the exhaust port of 2 cyl engines are the intake ports feeding oil/fuel from the carb into the cylinders. this pushes out the exhaust fumes and/but….. out goes a certain % of the new unburnt oily fuel .
