Thanks to those who helped me get this old 57′ Lark going. I have it on the 14′ Mahogany Paceship boat. After finding a few cracks in the old fuel line and fixing them, I took it out for the first run. Well my question for those who knows these motors is how fast should I go? I only got about 20 mph. It runs well, I set it at high speed 3/4 and low speed at 1.5 open.

Hard to say how fast it "should go", even with all the details such as weight, weight distribution, surface area of the hull etc. I got about 26 mph full out with my ’59 35 hp Evinrude on a 14 foot, welded aluminum (’68 Crestliner Sea Scout ).

The carb settings are just to get the motor started. The low and high speed need to be adjusted while underway on the boat. You will need an assistant to drive while you dial the carb in. When you get the needles set right the motor will sing.Instructions on how to do this can be found in many service manuals. I’ll try to track one down and post the link. Hang tight. 😉

What prop are you running? Another major factor. What height is the cav plate relative to the keel?

To tune the needle, start with the high speed. Go full throttle, then slowly, giving motor time to respond, turn the needle clockwise in small increments, until it wants to die or backfire. At that point back off needle 1/4 turn.

then go down to idle, and do the same. In small increments, giving motor time to respond, turn CW until it lean sneezes and wants to die, then back out 1/4 turn.

Take off dials, and re install with them pointing at each other. This is to know if they move in the future. tighten up packing nuts. You are done!

Will the carb settings make a big difference on speed? I am using the original prop.

              Most definitely.

I’ll take it out today with a partner to drive and play with it a bit. It just sounded like the RPM could spool out a bit. But it could just be the hull type and weight.

I took it out today and with some adjustment to the high speed needle the motor revved up to a much better RPM and the speed increased from 18 mph to 25 mph. Do I adjust the low speed dial the same way at idle?

Yup. Max rpm’s at a smooth low idle.

Once you adjust the low speed, it’s recommended to repeat the high speed adjustment, and then re do the low speed. Rinse and repeat. 🙂
