I need to drop the lower unit to replace the impeller. How do I disconnect the shift shaft? ( I have the sinking feeling it’s under the power head)

Well, actually, the water pumps are not attached to the lower unit, they are mounted under the powerhead. So it has to come off.

Put the motor on a stand. Remove the reverse lock hoop and loosen the clamp screw at the bottom of the swivel shaft. Then loosen the 10 screws that clamp the leg to the power head adapter plate, and drop the whole leg down. THe pump housings are visible underneath the gearshift linkage. Romove the linkage and you can service the pump.
