I have a good 1957 12 HP Sea King with bad rod bearing and scored crank . Can I swap the block with 1955-56 Evinrude-Johnson 15 hp block. From looking at pictures it looks about the same. If I put the Sea King head and reed valve cover on 15 hp block I could install gas tank and side cowls. Is this possible.
While they share the similar blocks, they are different inside. The 15 E/J has roller bearing rods and is a larger bore. If you are considering swapping the complete powerhead, I think that will work. But because of different bore, the heads are different. Are you saying the E/J head doesn’t have the cowl brackets? I thought it did. But certainly could be wrong.
Frank the E/J have cowl brackets but they are different than the sea king. The sea king has a screw thread on head for cowl and E/J have a rubber grommet.
Hmmm. Your Sea King must be the "Standard" model then??. Yep, re-reading it I see you said it has an integral gas tank. I guess it is a moot question anyway because of the different bore.
Frank, I think he’s talking about swapping the entire powerhead. How I’m reading it, at least.
I’ve thought about doing it myself on my 12D10
Yes, that’s the way I read it too. But there is the problem with putting the Sea King tank and cowls on the J/E powerhead. At least that is what I’m getting. We didn’t even get to the J/E powerhead might not fit the "Standard" Sea King exhaust housing. I suppose you know the "Standard" is the old pre-’55 stuff, compared to the 1957 "Deluxe" models with up to date lowers.
