If it has not been used in a while the rings may losen up and increase compression after its been run somebut my 59 5.5 Johnson runs great always starts on first pull but is in the 60 to 65 range if it was below 55 might worry may pull the power head and replace impeller and the felt lower seal do not run it less than 24:1

November 29, 2017 at 2:27 am #68049Your question about wasting your time….. Absolutely not. My 1958 5hp spent its early life in salt water then sat unused for 40 years.
A couple years ago a carb cleaning, ignition rebuild, fuel pump and impeller service brought it back to life. It starts easy, runs smooth all day.
A compression check before resurrection was also 65lbs! I thought I was wasting my time too but remembered it ran great when I was using it in the 70’s and it didn’t dissapoint.
You will be all set when you find that last bug.
I run 16:1. Kinda fun to experiment with oils to see which smoke etc. and this spring it really liked the rediculously expensive XD100.December 12, 2017 at 1:18 am #68513Update: Cleaned the tank again and got a lot more gunk out of it. Cleaned the carb yet again to get what was in the tank out of the carb and it runs great! Idles low and smooth in gear and out. My sons had it out today and ran almost a tank of gas threw it with no isssues. They said it didn’t miss a beat. I guess I need to be a little more thorough cleaning these built in tanks.
