      Recently acquired a pretty nice 2hp Elgin. As a more traditional Evinrude/Johnson person, I know next to nothing about these things. Does anyone know anything about them? I believe it was originally a Bronze-y color, which has faded over time. Thanks!

        I think your motor likely has an air cooled powerhead with a water cooled leg.  If that is the case, use air cooled two stroke oil.  Minimum 16/1.  Might have a rubber impeller, but I would bet propeller pressure fed.  A little disasembly will certainly tell you.  You can guess based on if there is a tube behind the propellor to pick up water or not.  Cowling removal can be tricky.  Just go gently and don’t force it.

          Thanks. I run TCW-3 outboard oil at a 16:1 mix, and it ran just fine. It is a water cooled leg, but as this is my first ever air cooled outboard, how hot should the P/H run? I was getting temps between 190-220 degrees at WOT. I was wrong, as under all of the dust, turns out its a blue-green color.

            You’re right – it is in nice shape.  Cowling dents/damage can make cowling removal so hard with this style of motor.  I don’t know what the tempurature should be.  A tempurate reader thingymajic is on my “maybe someday I’ll get one” list of tools.

            Also, my understanding is that TC-W3 isn’t designed for the heat air-cooled engines generate because water cooled engines run colder, and it’s for the latter.  I’d bet it’s less about running smoothly and more about lubrication and heat dissipation.  Plus, it’s easy to find in real small bottles so you don’t have to buy a whole lot to just run the engine for a little while.  👍

              US MEMBER PAY BY CHECK

              I use leftover outboard gas in my Lawnboy mower for 20 years with no ill effects.  Not recommending it, just giving my experience.
