I have a 58 Johnson 12 hp electric start that runs great but I can’t start it electrically. I am missing the female plug from the controller box AND the positive post on the starter is broken off. Somebody told me that it can be fixed. Can anyone tell me how to get the starter out of the bracket that holds it onto the motor? And I don’t want to spend $450 for the replica plug made by NY Marine.
December 10, 2022 at 10:57 pm #269854I believe you need to remove the starter bracket with the starter attached to the bracket. Once you have removed the starter and bracket assembly you should have no problem removing the starter for repair.

December 11, 2022 at 12:37 pm #269876FD12 and FDE 12 are both listed as 18hp ! on the red book
johnrude what does your plate ID show FD12 did not mean 12 hp

December 11, 2022 at 3:16 pm #269882JR concerning your pigtail for the electric start. Here is what I did on my Evinrude 18. I found a set of jumper cables, red/black, that had a number 6 wires and cut the clamp ends off. Installed wire ends big enough to attach to the battery on one end and the starter on the other. I punched out the housing under the carb so the wires would go through where the old pigtail was. I now run the wires to the solenoid/battery inside the boat. You also need a small wire for the choke solenoid. It works great and don’t cost much! Understand that it is not original for those years. Some where around 1960. OMC eliminated that stupid connector and did exactly what I have described.

December 11, 2022 at 6:39 pm #269900Thanks L G. I’ve thought of a similar rig. The “pig tail” should be short so as not to interfere with removing the motor. I made a pig tail with to off the shelf plugs, both water proof and dust proof. One plug two conductors for the battery and starter. The other is a three conductor plug for choke and Mag continuity. The motor side is male. The other plugs are female. All leads are taped together and lead back to the control box. I covered the cables with heat shrink just to clean it up. Thanks for the lead.
December 11, 2022 at 6:41 pm #269901Thanks Frankr. I was afraid to undo those two bolts. The diagram in the red book makes it look like the whole guts of the starter come undone.
December 11, 2022 at 6:56 pm #269903Crosbyman. Not sure if you were replying to me or one of the other posts. My 1958 Johnson is a 18 HP Electric Start…..FDE-12. Not sure where the confusion is. I wasn’t sure how to get the starter out of the bracket so that I could take it to somebody to repair. There is a welder guy close to TO that says he can fix the broken post. There is also a guy in Simcoe that can do it, apparently.
With respect to the female plug to fit the five pin male plug in the engine frame, I know it is a long shot to find one. It is easy enough to “jury” rig a pig tail and a couple of water proof plugs to suffice. I was just hoping to keep things somewhat original. The plug that one can buy from NY Marine is just too expensive.
However, I am most of the way through a CAD drawing of the “plug” and then I’m going to hand it off to a 3D printer guy. Just have to figure out the wire connections inside the new plug. I’m told that most high school students have the smarts to do this sort of 3D printing.December 11, 2022 at 6:58 pm #269904Thanks CC.
The FDE- 12 refers to a 1958 18 HP Electric Start Johnson. -
