      Post #1….”I have a 58 Johnson 12 hp electric start that runs great”            …..confusion came from “12hp”  …. none made in 58 per the red book

        Thanks Frankr. I was afraid to undo those two bolts. The diagram in the red book makes it look like the whole guts of the starter come undone.

        The guts WILL come out, if you let them. Just hold the starter together as you remove the bolts, then use those bolts, with a couple of spare 1/4-20 nuts, to keep it together, while you send it out to be fixed.

        Long live American manufacturing!
