I HAVE A 58 FLYING SCOTT 60 HP THAT I’M TRYING TO RESURRECT AND RECENTLY DISCOVERED THAT ONE OF THE COILS IS BAD. I’M ATTACHING PHOTOS IN THE HOPES THAT SOMEONE WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THIS COIL. THERE ARE NO MANUFACTURER MARKINGS OR NUMBERS OF ANY KIND, AND OTHER THAN THE SCOTT ATWATER PART NUMBER, I DON’T HAVE MUCH TO GO ON. I’M REALLY NOT HOLDING MY BREATH THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO LOCATE A REPLACEMENT COIL, BUT I COULD USE SOME HELP IN MAYBE FABRICATING SOMETHING THAT WILL WORK. I SEE IN THE FORUMS THAT IT IS NOT UNUSUAL TO TAKE A COIL FROM A DIFFRENT ENGINE OR COIL MANUFACTURER AND MODIFY SO IT WILL WORK. PROBLEM IS, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS INVOLVED IN DOING THIS, AND I’M HOPING THERE IS SOMEONE THAT CAN EDUCATE ME IN THIS REGARD. BESIDES THE PHYSICAL FIT, ARE THERE ANY ELECTRICAL VALUES I NEED TO WATCH OUT FOR, IE OHMS, VOLTS ETC? CAN I TAKE A COILS WITH IDENTICAL LAMINATE DIMENSIONS AND SWITCH LAMINATES IF NEED BE? THIS COIL OPERATES WITH A BALAST RESISTOR AND I’M NOT CLEAR ON HOW MUCH THAT WILL LIMIT MY OPTIONS. I COULD USE SOME HELP WITH THIS PROJECT AT THIS POINT AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS I CAN GET.

THIS ENGINE HAS A MASSIVE GENERATOR THAT WEIGHS ABOUT 30 LBS WITH THREE SETS OF POINTS AND THREE CONDENSORS MOUNTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE GENERATOR.. I’M ATTACHING PHOTOS OF THE GENERATOR AND THE COILS THAT SHOW THE SETUP. TWO OF THE COILS ARE WORKING PROPERLY, BUT ONE IS DEAD. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE COILS ARE MOUNTED NEAR THE HEAD.AND WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS COME UP WITH A COIL THAT CAN BE MOUNTED ON THE HEAD. I’VE GOT LOTS OF ROOM FOR A DIFFRENT COIL, BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT KIND OF COIL I WILL NEED TO GET, OR WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IN ORDER TO GET A COIL THAT WILL WORK. I CAN PROBABLY WORK AROUND THE PHYSICAL SHAPE OF ANOTHER COIL AS LONG AS I CAN DETERMINE THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE COIL ITSELF.

March 25, 2021 at 2:30 pm #234948NO, IT IS AN OLD STYLE BATTERTY OPERATED IGNITION SYSTEM COMPLETE WITH COILS, CONDENSERS AND THREE SETS OF POINTS BUILT INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE GENERATOR. THE COILS MOUNT ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE NEAR THE HEAD AND THERE IS ONE COIL FOR EACH CYLINDER. THE POINTS AND CODENSERS ARE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE GENERATOR. TWO OF THE COILS ARE WORKING BUT ONE IS DEAD AND I’M TRYING TO COME UP WITH REPLACEMENT COILTHAT WILL WORK. I HAVE A FAIR AMOUNT OF ROOM FOR A COIL OF A DIFFERENT SHAPE, BUT I’M NOT SURE ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES I NEED TO LOOK FOR, OR IF THERE IS MUCH DIFFERENCE.I DON’T THINK I CAN USE A COIL DESIGNED FOR A MAGNETO, AND THE COILS IN MY ENGINE REQUIRE A BALAST RESISTOR WHICH I ASSUME MEANS THAT THE COIL OPERATES AT 6 VOLTS OR AT LEAST SOMETHING LESS THAN 12 VOLTS. I TRIED TO ATTACH PHOTOS OF THE GENERATOR BUT CAN’T SEEM TO MAKE IT WORK. THE GENERATOR ON THIS THING IS HUGE AND LOOKS LIKE ONE YOU HAD ON YOUR FIRST CAR. IT IS BASICALLY THE KIND OF IGNITION SYSTEM YOU WOULD FIND ON A CAR FROM THE 40’S AND 50’S.
ANYHOW, I HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE AND HOPE SOMEONE CAN POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AT THIS POINT.

March 25, 2021 at 4:03 pm #234962There were old cars that used coils with ballast resistors. Seems like one of those coils should work, if you have room. Sorry, I don’t know which cars.
March 25, 2021 at 4:19 pm #234970A quick look at Motor’s Auto Electrical Systems book says that external ballast resistors were used with Prestolite coils of the day. I’ll leave it at that for now. BTW, “Ballast Resistor’ means that the resistance changes as it heats up.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the early OMC battery ignition coils will work for you, if you can fit it in somewhere. EDIT: That would be OMC 0379569, way too expensive to experiment with.
