I have a new wiring harness I put in this motor. there are two black wires that I know are supposed go up to the coils/points to ground them out. On this motor, there is only one wire coming off the stater plate. How do these two wires get hooked up?
Also, there is a generator on this motor and I figured that the blue and yellow wire go to that but I don’t know which color wire goes to which post on the generator.
Does anyone have pictures of how these wires are hooked up. I have a wiring diagram but but that doesn’t show me how the wires are hooked up.
Hope these pictures help
Thank youJanuary 25, 2017 at 12:38 am #51646Are you sure you have a 1958? What is the model number on the powerhead?
By the way, nice having a new wiring harness isn’t it!
January 25, 2017 at 2:06 am #516571957 magneto armature plate has one wire coming off it. 1958-up has two wires (for key switch) You can add a 2nd wire to the 1957 plate.
Yellow wire goes to generator armature (large one). Blue goes to generator field (small one)

January 25, 2017 at 3:37 am #51670This is supposed to be a ’58 motor. Wouldn’t surprise me if it had a 57 plate. This helps a lot. Thank you.
January 25, 2017 at 11:34 pm #51743Hey FrankR: I have motor with the generator on it. The wiring diagram shows a regulator. This motor does not have a regulator on it. I’m assuming I need that so is there a regulator I should use? (part number??)
Thank you for your help.January 26, 2017 at 12:06 am #51746The regulator is located inside the starter relay box on the transom.
bkrsdozJanuary 26, 2017 at 2:09 am #51757Thank you bkrdsoz. There is no regulator in the box I have. Would you have a part number for it?
Thank you again.January 26, 2017 at 2:28 am #51759I went thru the ’58 RDE parts manual and couldn’t find the generator or regulator in it. It only shows the starter with the solenoid in the electrical box. Would the charging system have been an option in ’58 which was installed later?
January 26, 2017 at 2:53 am #51761Yes was not standard equipment, generator was an option. Its in the Accessories Catgalog. I don’t have it on me right now but will post later if someone doesn’t beat me to it.
The OEM regulator is near to impossible to find, but there is a Harley regulator that works.
