      Hello all,

If I’m lucky enough to find a shift handle am I going to also need the adjustment lever as well or will the handle hold on tight enough?
      Thank You
      Glen

        Gomaqn,
Not sure what you mean by adjustment lever.

What HP motor do you have there? Shift handles were different for different HP motors those years. I have a 10 HP that had both those parts broken and found a guy here a few years ago that had NOS parts at a reasonable price. Note the 10 HP parts only fit 10 HP motors.

That part the handle mates to has two slightly oblong holes in it where it looks like there is a broken slot. That screw at the base of the handle goes through one of those holes, and yes you need that part.

I bought both parts from Ken Hall, who deals in old parts. Contact info for Ken is below. Have your model number ready to be sure you get the right parts.

It’s a 18 hp. Looks like I’ll have to pull the motor off to get to the shift linkage…Drat. I”ll give Ken a call
            Thank You

Those parts should not be too tough to find…And yes, the shaft should be replaced as well, which means the powerhead must come off… That sure looks like a nice low hour fresh water motor, so pulling the powerhead should not be a big deal…. While the powerhead is off, good time to inspect the lower seal… Good time to pull the gearcase and do the water pump as well…
I’m sure I have those pieces, but in the wrong color…Let me know if you can’t find them…

I haven’t bought a motor in a while but I couldn’t resist this one. I also get the pleasure of learning all about electric start and pressure tanks Ha!
I’ve changed the impeller and waiting on some other parts.

That looks to be a beautiful engine with electric start, making it even more desirable….
I’m guessing someone dropped it on the shift handle which broke it and the shift lever shaft…
It’s no big deal to pull that powerhead off, looks like a fresh water motor…
This engine is certainly worth the extra effort….

                    Hello All,

I found the parts i needed for the shift handle. Fleetwin mentioned checking the lower seal. I watched a Johnnyrude video in which he sprayed a little WD-40 on the upper seal and turned the flywheel to look for little bubbles. Would that be the same way to check the lower seal? The powerhead came off pretty easy. I usually put on new gaskets but these look in such good shape I was thinking about leaving them…or is that a bad ideal? As always thank you all for all your help.

That lower seal looks almost new, like the rest of the engine….The seal pieces are just held in place by that snap ring…It would only take a few minutes to remove and inspect the pieces, might as well replace the oring inside the carbon seal if you are going to pull it apart. If you feel uneasy about messing with it, I would suggest leaving it alone. But, please remember to be careful, moving that powerhead around, bumping it on a table, could break the carbon seal…Be sure to coat the driveshaft splines liberally with OMC moly lube before reinstalling the powerhead and make sure the oring is in place on the top part of the driveshaft splines.
That gasket “looks OK”, but is probably dried up and stiff. I would probably replace it..If you decide to reuse the gasket, apply a thin coating of OMC gasket sealer to the gasket surface, you sure don’t want a leak after reassembly…
Did you find a replacement shift lever and shaft?
