I’m in no hurry. I don’t mind to go ahead and make some new gaskets. What would be a good gasket material to make them from that maybe the local auto stores have? I feel comfortable enough to take apart that lower seal just to check and see. I’m going to have to pull the lower unit again to retrieve a washer from the inner shifter handle connection Ha! I’ve learned to walk away from things when it gets frustrating and take a shot or two.
      Thanks again

Wow, nice motor! The base gaskets are readily available….no need to make them. They are tough ones to make anyway, as they are somewhat complex and not very robust, in terms of just handling them. The o-ring inside the lower crank seal is also still available. Since 18s are prone to water ingestion and seizure, if it were me, I would replace that o ring. Just be very, very careful of the black piece, as it is EXTREMELY fragile, if pried upon.

        Long live American manufacturing!

Agree with Bill, plenty of NOS gaskets to be had for this engine….
Once the gearcase is off, I would definitely replace the impeller using an OEM impeller.
Change the gear lube to make sure there is no water present…
