      I have a 1958 Sportwin 10 that I scrapped (seized)

I’ve had a guy contact me that needs one for a 1955…will they interchange?

      thanks in advance

compare part numbers, or size and location of the magnets to the flywheel key.

I’m thinking it won’t work. Doesn’t 1955 have the old style recoil starter with 3 pawls, and 1958 has the one with a single plastic pawl?

It should be a ’56. Looks to me like that’s the first year for the Sportwin, and it uses the later-style (single-pawl) starter. So I’m thinking the ’58 will drop right on there.

1955 ten would be a QD Johnson – First year of 10 horse Evinrude Sportwin was 1956 and it DID have the single pawl starter. . . . . . 😀

Isn’t there something about the 1958 flywheel that is different that the 56-57s also…Something about the flywheel diameter being slightly smaller? The rewind pulley might be unique as well. I can’t confirm this, but remember this past discussion….

I believe you’re right. The small flywheel, I think, came about when they went to the smaller gear case. Trying to put the 10 on a diet, so to speak. The recoil housings were the same, but the rope plate was different. The nylon starter pawl pivot was closer to the center on the 1958 & up versions.

Differences between the ’56-’57 and ’58 and up 10 HP.
For the recoils the connecting links and posts were moved in for ’58 and up 10 HP. On the flywheels there is a different dia. up top for the pawl engagement. Under the flywheels the same diameter for coil heels.

’55 was a different pawl setup so they won’t interchange.
