It looks like it’s necessary to remove the manual rewind starter spool assembly
to gain access to the one carb nut.
There’s a detailed procedure in the Westbend manual to dissemble the
whole works, but nothing about if one wants to simply remove the whole
      assembly.
Can I just remove the two saddle clamps without the whole thing going “Poof”?
      Thanks.

I have the same problem with a 1960 Elgin 7.5 ( same starter set up) and I’m afraid to touch it.

Maybe this reminder will spur someone on to comment on this. It looks temptingly simple, but still……

Just follow the instructions.  It really isn’t as bad as it appears.

I had mine apart at least three times.
I believe I wound the spring 8 times per instructions,
and that worked out good for rope retraction.
I did have some trouble getting the pin back in the
            top, but I finally won.

The piece that the spool and carb are bolted to is broke on mine.  Any body got one to sell?

Bucc,   I believe you can just take the four screws out of the two saddle clamps and  it should release the whole recoil starter,  but you’ll have to clamp the spool that the rope wraps around  so it doesn’t try to recoil the rest of the rope and unwind the spring, I use one of those hand clamps directly on the rope spool !  Those little 7 1/2’s are great running engines and pretty powerful for their size !  Good luck with your project !

My 1959  7-1/2 and 12 hp Elgins both turned out to be pretty
good runners. The reverse lock on the 12 hp is buggered up,
but I may tear into it this winter.

I learned not to put the rewind on until I was sure I had the bugs
                  out of the carburetor!
