Came across a Craigslist deal on an 18hp “Golden Jubilee” I couldn’t pass up.
Currently going through everything getting it in proper running condition. Got the ignition in good shape, it’s all set to go. I then moved on to the carb… Rebuilt the carb with an OEM kit, it’s all set now. Upon reinstallation, I’m currently stuck on synchronizing the ignition/throttle. The original brass linkage rod between the throttle and the roller arm had a bit of a bend in it so at first I thought I just needed to tweak the bend to set align the ignition cam with the roller. So I bent the rod and got it to make contact right at the mark on the cam. However, this caused the throttle plates to not be fully open at full throttle. I proceeded to do some internet research…
I came across a video showing a ’59 18hp brass ignition cam plate secured with two screws. One of the screw holes on the cam plate was slotted to allow adjustment. I thought, OK this is how it’s done. This morning I went to properly adjust mine only to find there was no slot on my cam plate, just mounting holes, so I can’t adjust mine. So… I’m stumped. I can’t quite figure out how this can be set up properly. One other note, I’ve come across other images of the throttle/roller arm linkage showing it perfectly straight, no bends. So why did mine have a bend?
Any tips in getting this set up properly are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
