I’m putting a new head gasket on and I have an OEM gasket. What I cannot find is a definitive answer as to using gasket sealant or not? The OEM gasket does not have a shiny side so I’m assuming that it does not have a sealant on it to begin with. I have read net discussions with some saying use Indian Head shellac, aluminum paint etc and some saying install it dry and simply re torque the head after it warms up. I would appreciate any advice on the subject.

      Thank you

The older head gaskets I’ve seen don’t have sealer on them like the newer ones do but if the block and head surfaces are true and flat, putting it on dry should be OK. Some guys use a light coating of Perfect Seal gasket dressing or something similar but I never have and have had good results.

Actually, I put them on dry for years too. But when OMC came out with their Gasket Sealing Compound, I changed my ways. From then on, that is what I used. I just feel it gives a better seal, which is even more important here in salt water territory. Use it on the bolt threads also. BTW, it is very similar to Perfect Seal, which (ahem) Mercury used.
