Hey Guys, A friend of mine has this ’59 E/rude Star flite V-4. Gear oil leaks from behind the prop. I’m still holding the O-ring that goes there (the one he never picked up from me). He claims that he installed a seal by "driving it in with a socket". Now it leaks still & I’m puzzled. I believe I’m correct & he doesn’t know what he is doing. My ques. to you all is : "Has this model had any particular problems in the prop area?" Thanks, George

No more than any other split gearcase motor if the era. We don’t know what he had apart do we? If he had the skeg off, he may not have installed a new o-ring and spaghetti (properly). Or the shaft may be worn. It’s been many, many moons since I’ve had one of those apart, but I sort of remember you don’t have to take it apart to replace the prop shaft seal (??).

Frank, I was thinking you can not put that seal in from the rear. I looked at ME and the part looks closed to the rear. ( the idea was to protect the seal, I think) I just barely remembered the little holes that they put in the casting on the outside. The seal wasn’t exposed as I remember. Not sure what he would have been driving in if the tip wasn’t off though? It HAS been a long time since I worked on one of those. As a matter of fact, I was only 6 yrs old when that motor came on the market. (Not bragging) That was a long time ago!

Well, waddya know, I have a service manual on that gearcase. You are correct, the skeg has to come off and the innards shucked out to replace the prop shaft seal. The seal comes out of the inner side of the seal housing, and the seal housing is located in place by a dowel pin. So, obviously, several areas of possible leaks exist if not assembled correctly.

(Not bragging either) but I had been working on motors for 4 years when that motor came out. Dang, I feel older than rocks.
