      Well, the early thermostat supercedes to the newer SS unit, so there isn’t much you can do if the temperature ratings are indeed different. Like I said, these engines don’t run hot at all, I don’t feel the newer thermostat will cause much higher water temps on this engine, and hot salt deposits should not be an issue.
      Have you tried running the engine with this new thermostat?

        Engine has not been run yet since disassembled, but getting close.
        Just got the points set, flywheel on, etc., and have great spark.
        Had to quit to come in and look up what 480 inch pounds was
        to torque the flywheel….. should have guessed, divide by 12, = 40 foot pounds!
        Notice on the diagrams that there’s no washer shown under the flywheel nut…
        really?

          That is correct, there is NO washer under the flywheel nut on this engine.

            If you really want the original one, but again, I feel the one Dan supplied will work just fine

              Just goes to show you that if you really need a part, there’s
              one out there some where! Will keep my fingers crossed
              that the old girl runs first, then see how the current
              thermostat performs!
