Hi all,
I pulled grandpa’s old fishing motor out and tried to run it again. With all of your help in the past I managed to get the old girl running again last summer, but never had any adequate boat time to tune it in (a lack of a rowboat was a problem). Well I have a nice 14′ rowboat now and took the motor out today to try it out.
The motor starts and idles well, but when I put it in gear and give it the gas it dies out. It will idle fine below the START mark on the throttle, had it running at a nice low idle and all was well. But if I turn the throttle up past start it sort of bogs down and dies. It will run a bit above START with the choke pulled out, but it was not consistent.
My assumption is the high mix needle is badly set? I thought the setting was 3/4 of a turn out to start with? Any suggestions on where I should go with this? I have another motor that wasn’t even kicking but I will start a seperate thread for that. Thanks for the advice.

Richen it and see what happens!
You may also want to richen the low speed needle a bit as well.
Once you run some fuel through the circuits you may be able to re-adjust as necessary.
Hopefully you are running a bare minimum of 24:1 mix.August 1, 2015 at 11:01 am #21365Most carburetor problems—are not. You don’t say what you have done to it so far, but have you checked the ignition? Have the old coils been replaced yet?

Frank – I had the carb off and soaked in carb cleaner and rebuilt it sometime over a year ago, then it got tank tested, but no boat test. I may have done a few other small things, but I dont remember what and I had documented it here, but thats gone now.
I’m pretty sure the coils have been replaced in the past, but I will pull the flywheel and check. I can make sure the points are set OK when I’m in there. I’m also going to replace the bulb/line as it seems a bit suspect as well, though I would think a problem with the gastank line would show up shortly after you tried to speed up, rather than right away.
Thanks again guys. I’ll keep you posted.
