I am in the midst of rebuilding a pair of 1960 40hp Evinrude Lark IIs on my 18’ Lyman. I am replacing all bearings and seals, and actually the crank on one of the motors. On the power head I am currently working on the carbon bearing seal was broken when I pulled the crank out. The rubber quad ring looked like it was occupying the same spot as the parts sort of fell out during disassembly. My question is this, does the rubber quad ring go inside the hollow of the carbon seal? That doesn’t seem right but it seems like it could. Otherwise though I don’t see how this carbon seal could actually do all that much sealing.

Mike
