I recently acquired a 1961 Elgin 25HP, it came off an Elgin boat so is non tiller model, came with Battery Cables, but harness to engine wire block was removed. I am trying to figure out how to start and bypass what the ignition switch wouldve done etc.. I have so far tested the starter which works fine, however getting no spark so thinking its either the neutral switch which i believe can be easily bypassed by unplugging and tying together. Are there any other wires that need to be jumped in order to get spark before i check/clean the points? Im thinking its likely not the points since previous owner said after the boat sat for 55 years he was able to fire it up, just didnt run well as he had to hold choke etc.. any help woudl be appreciated

November 30, 2020 at 2:46 pm #223983Thanks for the reply Frank, from what I could dig up I see its a Elgin Branded Scott Motor Model 574.60350 – 27HP, Battery ignition.. it does have a diagram pasted under the hood as well.. I havent had tons of time due to other projects to work on this but eager to. What I have tested so far after putting some oil in the cylinder and hand pulling to lubricate things, I removed sparkplugs and tested spark with throttle lever in start / shift in neutral, was not getting any spark. I also tested jumping the neutral switch to bypass that, same result. Also tested starter with batter plugged in, jumping red to white on the wiring block. I suspect ill need to clean the points at minimum but before I go and pull off the flywheel when my puller comes in I wanted to check with someone that may be familiar with the wiring diagram to see if my test is flawed or confirmation it shoulve yielded a spark. Any help would be appreciated.
November 30, 2020 at 5:09 pm #223990That has battery ignition, so the wiring has to be hooked up in order to make spark. Note the ballast resistor at the dash panel. Ignition power must pass through that ballast on the way back to the motor. Yeah, you can hot-wire it if you know what you are doing, but you still need that ballast resistor.
