Hi, I am new to this forum and have just purchased a 61′ Brunwick with a Evinrude Lark 40hp outboard all original from the original owner.
When I purchased it the motor started up great.
I changed the lower gear case oil and took out the pivot pin by mistake, but was able to put it back in when I lifted the motor horizontally.
My question is: could I have gotten the pin in wrong? It seemed to go in the hole on the shifter arm.
After replacing the lower case with new gear oil I tried to start it and it backfires.
When the shifter is in neutral the prop spins freely and when in forward or reverse the prop does not spin, but does wiggle a little back and forth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Michael
August 31, 2016 at 2:52 am #42999You should be fine on the shifter pivot pin. If you have fwd neutral reverse as you tested then it is working. You can take it back out and look in the hole and see the shift fork and receiving hole if you really want to double check.
From my non scientific observations, OMC used Phillips head screws on things that the lay person may not want to touch. Shifter screw, coil mag plate screws, exhaust clam shell cover screws, etc. of course it makes no difference to us now and may not even be true, just what I have noticed.
Did you take the spark plug leads off/change plugs? Sounds like you have them reversed. Top on bottom, bottom on top. I made this mistake before and you get backfires in this condition.
I have three similar motors and love all my big twins. Good luck with it, you will love it, please feel free to reach out if I can help.
August 31, 2016 at 2:56 am #43000I doubt the backfiring is related to yr adventure with the shift pivot pin, except that when you tipped the motor horizontal the gas in the carb would have drained somewhere (into the silencer?)
August 31, 2016 at 2:57 am #43001Do you prefer maniac Or Michael, anyway welcome to the madness. Sounds like you got the pivot in correctly, you got lucky. Buy tilting the motor You may have loaded it up with gas. It may be OK after it it sits a while.

That is normal. That gap is necessary for the clutch dogs to slide into engagement.Garry
August 31, 2016 at 12:39 pm #43020I want to thank all the quick responses to my question. This boat is just like the one my Dad bought when we were in high school back in 1968.
Of course I loved it when I saw it for sale. I am looking forward to using it with my brother who also remembers my dad’s boat.Michael
