How can you tell the difference between a Starflite III Unicharger model and a normal Starflite III?
The motor in this post looks identical to mine (pull start and what not), though I’m not sure what the difference between the two models is…Totally ignorant!
1961 Evinrude Starflite IIIAlso, if there is no ‘generator’, how am I supposed to keep my battery tendered while in operation? FWIW, this is going on a 61 Barbour Silver Clipper.
This is an excerpt from the Evinrude catalogue:
Thanks!

July 12, 2021 at 4:42 pm #242655Yep, the two models sure look identical, no way to differentiate them from a picture….
Is this an engine you are thinking of buying? If so, perhaps the owner can give you some pictures with the engine cover off….Basically, if you see a recoil starter on top, then he has the standard model with no alternator/generator…The generator could have been added as an accessory though..In that case, it would look like the picture above…
The electric start engines didn’t come with charging systems back then, you would have to add them as an accessory… 1961 was kind of a cross over year, 62 introduced the electric shift engines…Electric shift engines required a charging system…So, in 61, you had the models with the new alternator system, but they still had manual shift.
You really don’t need the charging system if you have a decent heavy duty battery, unless you are running all sorts of accessories…Just give the battery a trickle charge once a week to keep it up.July 12, 2021 at 4:42 pm #242656YES !
July 12, 2021 at 4:49 pm #242657One more thing to consider….The engine isn’t worth much without it’s boat wiring harness/key switch etc, especially if it has the alternator system…So, look the wiring harness over carefully before buying, make sure it is in serviceable condition..
July 12, 2021 at 4:55 pm #242658The picture shows a GENERATOR! A UNICHARGER is built in under the flywheel and to me resembles a flying saucer with round porthole windows all around the circumference. A Generator has to be running about 2000 RPM before it starts to charge. A UNICHARGER will charge 20 Amps at idle.
July 12, 2021 at 4:56 pm #242659OK Zach, didn’t realize that second post/picture was of the engine you are wanting to buy….And yes, that is the generator….So, this is the standard model with the generator kit added…Again, be sure the boat wiring harness/junction box, key switch/gages are in good serviceable shape…
Sorry for the confusion…

July 16, 2021 at 7:29 am #242664Hi thanks for all the responses! I actually OWN all of this, very cheaply as well, like mostly free. The boat that will be on the receiving side is below. The two items I also have is the eclectic start as well as this box (sharing below as well). What you see in these pictures is what I have. I also have the controls as well. I can contact the gifter if you think something is missing here…
