Oh No! 😮 You asked the oil mix question.
Thats the one question that gets the most responses of any.
I believe that oil is cheaper than replacing bearings so I run my
’57 Johnson 18hp at the recommended 24to1 with full synthetic Penzoil.
Sometimes it might be 16to1 if I’ve been using my CD12. I only have
      one tank right now.

Another question – I know that the stated fuel mix is 24:1, but I have read that the 1962 FD-16 motor is the same as the newer (late 60’s & 70’s) motors that use a 50:1 mix. Is it safe to run the 50:1? Any oil brands that smoke less than others? I don’t expect this motor getting used hard on this boat.

Why take a chance – I’d run 24:1. And use any brand of TCW-3 oil.

The motor runs and idles! It’s not quite as smooth as I expected, but I did find the oil return line(?) from the top bearing to the bottom was cracked at the bottom. Maybe that has an effect on it. I may just be too picky. Anyway, I’ll replace that line and see how it does on the boat.

Sorry about the oil mix question. I am currently running cheap TCW-3 at 24:1. It seems to leave more oil in the barrel than I was expecting.

Running in a barrel is dirty. The motors don’t get up to temp and a lot of the fuel goes right out the exhaust. At higher speeds, they are not nearly as dirty.

Can any 1/8" fuel line can be used for the oil line between the bearings?

Yes, flexible fuel resistant hose can be used to replace the original line between the bearings. If the original line is leaking, by all means replace it. Something that doesn’t have too heavy of a wall would be preferred.

I used some clear/yellow small engine fuel line. There is quite a bit of oil that gets pushed to the top bearing. I definitely wouldn’t want to plug this line. The motor is running pretty good. I got it mounted on the boat and well be taking it out for it’s maiden voyage tonight or tomorrow. Thanks again for everyone’s help! Mark

Perfect. I like to use the ckear.line for that hose if it needs replacing too. That is unless I’m going for as original asize possible on a really nice motor. You are right, you don’t want to plug this line or have it leaking out somewhere. It keeps the top main bearing alive.

Hope the maiden voyage goes well. 😉

Here is a video link to my boats maiden voyage. I thought you guys might like to see how the motor is running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_B5uMh1iL8

Great Job! You have saved another one from the recycler. Nice boat too.
