August 15, 2016 at 8:40 pm #42135See pics. This does not match any of the parts breakdowns. One piece drive shaft, solid hub prop with bronze shear pin. There is no color mismatch that would suggest a Frankenmotor. I don’t know if the pinion teeth are worn; there is thrust wear between the pinion and the housing, which may or may not be normal.
How to proceed here?

August 15, 2016 at 8:56 pm #42140That is correct. The shock absorber is still down in the gearcase, pull it out now, it sits beneath the plate you have pictured.
August 15, 2016 at 9:25 pm #42142OK, I see where the confusion is now…That is the original gearcase with the shock absorber. The thing to understand is that those shock driveshafts were two piece driveshafts, you have pulled out the top part of the gearcase which made you think it was the later style solid driveshaft. The wear is between the top of the lower driveshaft (which houses the shock absorber) and the upper seal/bushing/housing. The problem is that the shock has either broken/rusted/sprung causing the lower driveshaft to expand vertically into the upper bushing/seal/housing and the corresponding wear. You can probably just pull the lower driveshaft out of the gearcase without further gearcase disassembly.
August 15, 2016 at 10:21 pm #42144Yes, of course. I’m looking at the top of the pinion shaft, no the top of the pinion itself. I was using tunnel vision.
If I pull the pinion shaft out, will I have to dismantle the gearcase to get it back together?
If the shock has "broken/rusted/sprung" what’s the remedy? this is not even listed on the marineengine.com breakdown.
I’ve been pretty dense about grasping this…..thanks for the patience.
August 15, 2016 at 10:32 pm #42145Well, I would simply flip the gearcase upside down, and the lower driveshaft will probably fall out of the pinion…Please be careful, you don’t want the driveshaft to fall on the floor, and be sure to locate the driveshaft to pinion woodruff key, it will probably come out with the shaft. You shouldn’t have much trouble reinstalling the lower driveshaft into the pinion, but you will need to be very careful to make sure the key does not fall out during reinstallation…I guess make sure the key fits snugly into the lower driveshaft before installation, replace it if is loose.
I know you will get some advice about measuring the lower driveshaft once it is removed to confirm it has grown too long due to shock spring problems. Some guys have success compressing the spring back in place. If not, I’m sure you can find a decent lower driveshaft used from a member.August 15, 2016 at 11:36 pm #42148OK, the lower shaft lifted right out, and brought the Woodruff key. I see no obvious signs of distress except some discoloration at the top from rubbing on the underside of the pump housing. As much as I can tell from looking into the end, the spring looks OK. Overall length is about 6.817.
Material could be removed from the top of the shaft or the underside of the pump if need be to create some end play. Of can the shaft assembly be compressed back to what it’s supposed to be, or…..?
It would be VERY helpful to have some info on what the overall length of this thing is supposed to be, and how it’s made. I searched a little but didn’t find this info.

… to me. I have measured and red measured. 6 13/16" each time. I don’t think I want to shorten it much as it seems to be a good fit at that length.Prepare to be boarded!
August 16, 2016 at 12:26 am #42154OK! That search turned up plenty of good info. I think I know how to proceed.
If 6 11/16 is the right size, as stated a couple of places, then mine is about 0.13 too long. Ill see if I can compress it down a bit, and take a few thou off the top of the shaft and the underside of the pump housing.
