Son in law is out with his 1962 Lightwin.
Running fine then slows down and stops like it ran
out of gas. Totally dead won’t even pop. Checked
spark and fuel system, even tried squirting fuel
into the cylinders. Nothing. I took it out earlier
in the day and it ran well both at full speed and at
idle. Relating this to my earlier motors and open
poppet valve would do the same so are the reads
the place to start. If that isn’t the issue could it
be some kind of seal failure? I have seen that
discussed previously but am clueless as how that
is accomplished in this motor or if what he has
described indicated a seal failure has occurred.
With so many who are knowledgeable in this area
here, rather than just start pulling stuff off, seem
to make more sense to ask those who would know
what I should look for.
Thanks in advance,

July 5, 2015 at 1:13 pm #19501Just a thought, but are you sure the magneto is not to blame? You didn’t mention you checked for spark.
July 5, 2015 at 1:40 pm #19502IF YOU SQUIRTED A FUEL MIX INTO THE CYLINDERS AND DIDN’T GET A POP THEN IT IS SOMETHING IN THE IGNITION OR QUITE POSSIBLY A BLOWN HEAD GASKET CREATING LITTLE TO NO COMPRESSION TO FIRE THE MOTOR UP.
July 5, 2015 at 1:42 pm #19503I would start with a compression gauge.
I see you said the spark is fine, will it jump a 1/4" gap ok?
July 5, 2015 at 4:32 pm #19512yeah, start with the basics, kinda doubt the reeds are to blame. Didn’t overheat did it? Don’t forget to check fuel quality/water as well. No oil in gas??

July 5, 2015 at 11:34 pm #19544Defies logic; doesn’t it?
Say….do you suppose that in the course of all the testing and re-testing….maybe your son in law or a helpful volunteer managed to get the spark plug leads reversed?

July 6, 2015 at 12:31 am #19547Sounds like head gasket to me. They tend to blow a hole between the cylinders. So losing compression from one cylinder to the other.
July 6, 2015 at 9:48 am #19566I know you’re meticulous an no doubt used a torque wrench; so please pardon this question….sheared flywheel key?
Long live American manufacturing!
