While refurbishing the armature plate on my latest project (63 Evinrude 5.5hp), I noticed one of the pins that supports the point set had a slight – but noticeable – wobble. It is very slight, but it is there for sure.
The P/N for this plate is 580360.
A search of the parts bin yielded several plates all marked 580210. It appears the P/N was changed from the 1960 to 1961 model 5.5hp engines.
I have very carefully looked the two plates over and can see no differences except for very slight casting changes – a little rib here and no little rib there. As far as size and mounting holes, they are identical in every way.
Now to my three questions: 1) can I interchange the two plates (use the 580210 plate instead of the 580360 plate in the 1963 OMC 5.5hp engine)? and
      2) Since the point set is locked down by the machine screw, would the slight wiggle in the vertical pin even be an issue? and 3) Can I drive the pin out and maybe JB Weld it back in?
I’d sure prefer to swap the plates out.
      Thanks for the help.

580210 was the casting number. There were several revisions to the casting also, creating stuff like -1 or R1, etc, In any case, that 580210 became several other numbers once the casting was machined.

Bottom line is if everything fits, and/or may need a hole drilled or something like that, it will work fine.

Those pins were cast into the aluminum while still melted metal. Trying to repair it would probably prove futile, especially since you appear to have a stash to pick from
