I own a 1964 Evinrude 18hp Fastwin that is VERY hard to pull. I have to put my foot on the back of the motor and pull just to turn it over. It’s not stuck or rusty inside the cylinder, and it has great spark. Does it have a compression release on it? If so is it clogged? Thank you for all your help.

Is it hard to pull with the plugs out as well? If so, perhaps the gearcase is bound up….

Had a similar problem with a 10HP Merc. Water intrusion had caused every bearing in the lower unit to seize. Try dropping the lower unit to see if it helps. Also I wouldn’t force anything until you find the cause of the problem.

Is it just me or is there something wrong with this picture? If it is THAT hard to pull over, how can you even know if there is spark?

I agree about taking off the lower unit and taking the plugs out; but I know that if it were me, and I was having that much trouble pulling it, I would not be in any physical position to see a spark checker. I mean, it’s 18 hp so it’s not going to be like pulling over a lawn mower….

I took the lower unit off, and there didn’t seem to be any difference in how hard it is to pull. Also I took the plugs out and I can actually turn it with a corded drill with the plugs out and it is a lot easier. Is there any other things I can try?

Is the recoil starter timed right?
Here’s Max W’s article on how to do it.

It’s a great motor when running right. I’ve got the same motor and
it’s one of my favorite fishin motors.
Get the starter timed right and it’ll make a difference.

                Good luck .
