1/4 ich impact driver will pull the FW with the harmonic  puller without the strap    and flat head  bolts will loosen up.   just use the proper   sized blade for the  bolt heads

OK, admittedly I’ve had little 9.5hp experience.  But, do you really have to remove the flywheel to get the carb off?  Perhaps.  But, let’s back up a bit.  Did you remove the hex drain screw from the bottom of the carb to ensure fuel is flowing into it?  Did you remove the high speed jet and check it?  Again, you do need the special tool/screwdriver to remove that fixed jet without damaging it.  Did you try priming the engine by dumping a little fuel mix down the carb throat to see if it fired briefly?

I hate to see you rip into flywheel removal/ignition stuff needlessly.  And yes, those darn screws can be a nightmare, usually a hammer/impact screwdriver is your best bet.

Hopefully someone will chime in about the carb removal…  Nonetheless, no need to remove the carb until you have checked fuel flow and pulled out that high speed jet, these operations can be performed with the carb in place…

actually  the top half can be taken off for cleaning and inspection just don’t drop the back  screws  when removing.

the HS jet is easy to inspect  I never had to remove one on several 9.5.  a good blast of cab cleaner & air should flush out any crud.  if not poke it wit ha 2-4 lb mono

Leroy’S  on the MQ   is a pretty good  guide.

          Johnson (leeroysramblings.com)

it is important to flush ALL passages with carb cleaner and… eye glasses !

if all else fails  then the LS circuit   must be flushed with the  round cover plug removed   .  there are several utbes  on the 9.5

as to the FW removal I think it is part of the learning and maintenance process  if the electricals are of unknown condition.  No sense in finding out miles from shore

Me I replace coils points  condensers plug wires and boots also  change or oil the wick (comes in the kit)

              Thanks fellas!

So from what I am hearing, I don’t need to pull the flywheel to clean the carb.  I had planned to remove the carb and do a total bath and rebuild just like the guy in the video does.  I bought the carb kit from Amazon, etc…

That is good news because as luck would have it, although I finally got those screws out (vice grips on sides – had to dremel a bit to get a good grip), I like an idiot cross threaded some of the screw holes when attaching the dame puller.  So now, if I want to pull the flywheel, I am going to need to retap at least one of the holes.  WHAT A MESS!

But… if I don’t need to remove the FW to clean the carb, I can return all this sh$#t and just take the top off the carb and clean from there.

The leroysramblings link is super helpful.  Thanks for that.

So here is what I am gonna do:

              • I’m gonna check the jet thing mentioned above
              • I am gonna clean the carb with spray carb cleaner as best I can
              • I will dump a few thimblefulls of gas/oil mix into the top of the carb
              • I will make sure the lower end is submerged
              • And I will try to start it again.
              • And I will update you good people who are so kind to assist a schlep like myself.

I am a very skilled woodworker, but engines are like foreign language.

              Thanks again!

Apparently, the last screw for the carb removal is bolted to the engine block, and the access to it is blocked by the FW.  Also, reading another post below, (or maybe the Leroy page) the removal of that is super delicate.  Need to read more.

Fleetwin – what is the special tool I need to remove that fixed jet?  In the video on the carb rebuild, he seems to just unscrew it.

Also Crosbyman – can you explain this more:

“actually the top half can be taken off for cleaning and inspection just don’t drop the back screws when removing.
The HS jet is easy to inspect I never had to remove one on several 9.5.

If not, poke it wit ha 2-4 lb mono

What is meant by “HA 2-4 lb mono”?
Also how to inspect the HS jet?

jet is soft metal I would not  touch it… clean it  blow it decrud it  bt  I would not mess with it

going off -line for days  good luck
