August 22, 2023 at 10:33 am #279522That melted rubber mess in your picture is that shift rod seal/rubber boot. It has obviously failed and needs to be replaced, the engine won’t run without that seal being in place. That seal is not holding the gearcase on though. Once again, and I apologize for repeating myself, but the shift rod is disconnected from the gearcase, correct?
I’m hoping the gearcase is off by now, and that the driveshaft came down with it…. Don

August 30, 2023 at 10:11 am #279958No I have had some travels 2 weekends in a row and spent most of my time in between recovering and catching up on things I couldnt when I was traveling.
Joe B, I still need to come over and have you take a look. I might try tomorrow. I will call you.
I also am completely discouraged. I was really looking forward to taking this boat out all summer, and it feels like I am miles away from that at this point. The engine runs fine, but there is this overheating thing. And I can’t seem to get the lower end off which is the first step. I can’t even get that far.
I did have a few moments on the water that were awesome. I have the bug now. But too little.
Anyway thanks for letting me vent. I have thought of cutting an old garden tool handle in half, and with a friend, placing one end or each on either side of this motor and hammering the other ends at the same moment to jar this free. Another idea is: What about using some sort of separator tool like a small “jaws of life” Are there any tools out there I could rent that could do it?
To answer your question, yes Fleetwin, the shift rod is disonnected on both sections. The thing is just stuck. I do have one question now that I think about it. The engine side of this shaft has a curve in the tube like a plumbing pipe. Is that is what is stuck? you can see it in the photo as the seal is wrapped around it. If it’s curved, doesnt that make it harder to get enough pressure on it when prying? It looks like there are 2 shafts stuck. One the curved brass looking one, and a steel looking one.
August 30, 2023 at 10:15 am #279959When I speak of the garden tool handle idea, I mean to hammer down on the edge of the housing on both sides simultaneously to work it free. just to clarify.
August 30, 2023 at 12:29 pm #279972Well, the brass bent looking tube is the water tube. Anything is possible, but it is highly unlikely that it is stuck in the rubber impeller housing grommet. It is the driveshaft that is stuck

August 30, 2023 at 5:50 pm #279980Don’t do too much hammering or you will destroy the water pump housing.
Hope to see you soon, but this weekend ( Thursday – Monday) is not good, Look forward to your call
