Hello all. New member with a newly bought antique here. I have a 1964 west bend model #35401 35hp. It is slipping out of gear at half throttle so all research points to a worn forward gear/clutch dog. A local marina told me parts are extremely hard to find but a used chrysler (mid 1960’s) lower unit may fit. Another option is if forward and reverse gears are the same, can I simply swap the gears? Any and all help is deeply appreciated.

Also, if anyone can point me in a direction to get a manual for the outboard.

Looks like Chrysler made that 35-hp up thru ’75, with any luck at all any of those lowers fit. Chrysler didn’t like to change things too much.

I don’t know about swapping gears, but you might be able to turn the dog around, unless that’s been done already.

First thing to explore is the shifting mechanism and adjustment thereof. I believe that on your gearcase forward is engaged by the shift rod being DOWN. This works a rocker arm in the gearcase that pulls the dog clutch forward (towards the bow). If the shifting has been forced with parts not rotating, it is possible that something is bent and the dog clutch is not getting full travel forward and can jump.

If you have the gearcase I think you have, it is described in the Clymer "Chrysler Outboard Shop Manual" 1966-1984 as "Gearcase 20-50 hp." Many libraries have these manuals.

Thanks fellas. Checked shift linkage already and it seemed to fully engage. Yanking the gearcase this weekend so hopefully I will have photos and a diagnosis.
