I’m trying to help a friend with his 1965 Evinrude 9½.
- I checked all of the ignition stuff, and it has good spark.
- When I put a little gas down the carb throat, it fires right up.
- However, it will not fire when connected to the tank/gas line. When I pump the bulb, gas pours out of an orifice directly above the low speed jet.
I have several carburetor questions. I would greatly appreciate a phone number, so I can ask these questions without trying to describe everything via text.
By the way, my phone number if 715-338-8837.
Thank you in advance!
June 21, 2023 at 11:02 pm #277225Sounds like the float valve is either dirty or stuck open causing the flooding. Fuel shouldn’t be visible coming out of the carb while squeezing the primer bulb.
June 22, 2023 at 7:46 am #277226see float adjustment..make certain the float does not snag and the float is not damaged or “fuel logged”

June 22, 2023 at 10:29 am #277245Thank you, Crosbyman. This is most helpful.
FYI: I was a member for 20 years, and attended Tomahawk every year. But I lost interest after my wife of 29 years died.

June 23, 2023 at 1:51 pm #277293Well, I replaced the needle and seat with a new one that has the positive connection between the needle and the float. No more squirting gas out of the carb, but still will not run when connected to the tank & hose. In fact, I only got the faintest pop when trying to start it. Cleaned all orifices & jets in the carb (was actually pretty clean).
QUESTION: What would you recommend for the initial setting of the low speed jet?
June 23, 2023 at 5:31 pm #277303make certain the fuel reaches the carb… (pull the hose to it and sqeeze the bulb) no fuel no energy !!
sorry to ask… did you do all the electricals ?? check sparks and no wires crossed over on the plugs
close the idle needle and retract 1.5 turns see what happens…
squirt some fuel in the carb directly… see if that gets it going to draw fuel from the carb.
….try above START in forward gear (be careful) see if that helps if OK may have something misaligned cam /throttle plate wise
if it strats and dies maybe a bad fuel pump…. just lift the tank above the carb for a ” fuel transfusion” 🙂 if that helps bad pump !!

June 23, 2023 at 5:44 pm #277306Thank you for your continued input. I had the low speed jet set at about 1¼ turns, so that should have been “in the ballpark”.
At this point I have washed my hands of it, and gave it back to the owner. It used to be that I could tune up outboards in my sleep, but it’s been years of “out of practice”, so I had to admit failure. I’m bummed about failing, but at some point, one has to cut their losses.
I previously checked the ignition, and it appears to have good spark. However, since I no longer have ignition testing equipment (Merc-O-Tronic), I can’t say that all components are good.
I did run into a weird situation while timing it with a degree wheel. One set of points easily adjusted to the mark on the mag plate, but the other set of points was maxed-out on adjustment, and I was unable to get it within better that about a half inch of the mark.
