I just finished an evinrude lightwin folder and it runs like a top, however i dont feel its pumping water very well, I changed the entire water pump impeller including the plate and housing but it just doesnt seem to pump much water and the head seams to get alot hotter than my other lightwins. I ordered new water tube grommets for where the two halves come together and blew air in the tube. Any thoughts or ideas i have missed? I also noticed when you lift the motor higher than the folder joint it stops pumping all together. Hoping the new grommets make a difference. This is a ultra low hour freshwater only motor owned by my grandfather. It has sat in the case for almost 30 years before i got it. Thanks Dave
July 31, 2017 at 9:13 pm #62446OK, so you replaced the SS plate, the impeller and the aluminum hsg, correct? That complete water pump kit is very expensive! Did the motor run hot/overheat before the water pump work? Will the engine pump/cool OK if run low in the water with the joint submerged? I guess this is a tough way to judge the pumping because the outlets are under water!
As you know, from owning other lightwins, these engines run warm/hot on the exhaust cover because it is not water cooled. The head tends to run a little hotter than other OMC models as well. The best way to evaluate the cooling performance is to take temp readings on the right side of the block on the vertical water passage that runs down and out of the powerhead.
I am not that familiar with the components of the folding engines, and how the water tube is connected/sealed. I do not that sometimes the water tubes come in contact with the driveshaft and gets rubbed through causing a leak. But, on your engine, the upper water tube is fairly stationary, and not affected by gearcase removal/installation, so I am guessing a bent/pinched leaky water tube is not the issue.
Is this a fresh or salt water engine? Some of the internal passages are pretty narrow, and get plugged with salt easily. This sounds like a real nice engine, so we look forward to resolving the issue to avoid overheat damage.July 31, 2017 at 10:50 pm #62448Thanks fleetwin, yes replaced entire assembly, no idea if it overheated before because I changed it as part of my full redo after getting it from my grandpa. He said it never overheated before but that was 30 years ago. It does pump water when it is submerged below the folder but near as much as the other light wins I have. It was fresh water only. But was stored folded in the case for 30 years in an attic. I’m going to change the water tube grommets and see what I get. I will get temp readings and compare them to my other ones but I have a feeling something got up the tube while stored. I really look forward to using it, my pap said he ran it maybe two times since new. He also had the outboard disease and passed it on to me! Lol Thanks,Dave

August 3, 2017 at 5:51 pm #62551Davesko, I would pull the cylinder head, and the exhaust cover on the side of the motor, and check every water passage very carefully. As Fleetwin said, the internal passages are pretty narrow, and get corroded and blocked pretty easily. I was amazed how many of the passages were clogged when I did a refurb on a 59 Lightwin.
If you post some pictures, I’m sure others will chime regarding if you have all of the passages open, and where exactly to look. -
