      quote Wedgie:

Turn the flywheel a bit as you are dropping the gear case. There is a slot that the roll pin at the top has to line up with before it will drop.

More than one person has been stumped by this!

Yea, I remember my first experience with these. LOL
Fortunately, I got lucky and didn’t break anything.

I have always just used brute force, pried down on the gear case till the roll pin breaks. Then look AND FIND the remains of the pin. I have always tried to remove by rotating the flywheel first though, only worked once for me.
A local Seattle outboard repair shop counter guy told me the pry till it breaks technique, and gave me a lot of other helpful advise on my 6 hp when i first got my salt water PSB boat on 1993,and was new to outboards. He was a big help .

I too, have oftentimes pulled a 6hp gearcase down only to find that the pin was sheared off, even though I was trying to line up the pin with hsg slot….I think the reason this happens is that a swelled grommet/rusted water tube is holding the gearcase up…You would think that simply rotating the flywheel would cause the gearcase to drop when things are lined up, but the swelled grommet/tube makes it tough to determine when pin/slot are lined up.
