That has new grease in it, so I’m not thinking that’s stuck.
What is the timing mark on the flywheel referencing? I’m assuming it”s TDC on #1 cyl. Since my flywheel has none to be found on it, I think I have to back and retrace my steps. Is the mark actually #1 TDC or so many degrees from it? I have to establish an accurate location to place the timing mark back on the flywheel to have a correct starting point. It seems that the point set is opening too soon, which could indicate that my distributor arrow is pointing at the incorrect position on the flywheel when I install the timing belt, which sets everything off by the same degrees, Then when I go to #3 to set everything up, the distributor is already sitting at an incorrect position.
I’m going to leave it for a while and make sure I’m starting at the correct point before I continue. Unfortunately the timing mark is missing, which could be reason I’m having all this trouble. It’s seems to be a rather straightforward adjustment otherwise.
I’l let you know when and if I resolve this.
      Thanks, Rick

Well I discovered that the timing mark on this Merc 950, and at least some 4 cyl engines, is 20 DEG ATDC!. I now have marked my flywheel with it’s new timing mark and the rest of the setup went as planned.
Thanks Dave and all others that responded. It turned out top be a group effort!
        Thanks everyone!
