I was gifted an old viking 15hp that hadnt been used in ages. There was fishing line wrapped around the prop, and some rust on the ring. I pulled the drain plug and looks like water was inside the gear case as everything was covered in a milky white grease. I have been trying to find parts for it but not sure what would line up – I have heard old johnson and evinrude may work, but the gear casing seems different on the 18s from that year (at least that I have found). I believe I have seen Rudes/Johns with the same propeller and water pump (144060) but i have lost my searches from last summer and have been unable to locate what i had found again. Can someone point me in the right direction for parts to see if its worth my time? Also how would i pull out the seals and rings on the prop shaft without damaging the retaining rings, and separate the gear case housing (i saw on another outboard diagram that there may be a nut behind the prop seal to separate the 2 halves). I think i would need new prop seal and impeller, cotter pin for prop but not sure what else (shift seal and drive shaft seals?). Ill try and attach a couple of photos. Model is 154601 Eatons Viking 15hp 1965.
Thanks for any help 🙂April 28, 2021 at 12:17 pm #237305I believe your Viking was built by Chrysler, and is unrelated to OMC/Gale/Johnson/Evinrude motors.
April 28, 2021 at 12:22 pm #237306The reason your gearcase looks different than Johnnyrude gearcases is because it was a Chrysler product. OMC’s Gale division quit making Vikings for the T.Eaton Co in ’63 and they were sold thru ’64 until Chrysler started supplying motors branded Viking in ’65.
April 28, 2021 at 12:54 pm #237312Know where one might find aftermarket chrysler parts? my googling is usually pretty good, but this motor is not playing nice 🙂
April 28, 2021 at 5:09 pm #237328When Mercury bought Bayliner and Force outboards, I guess they wanted to unload some NOS parts, because they sent us microfiche for Elgin, (I think) Viking, Force and other derivatives of the old Chrysler. Give me a model number and the parts you hope to find. I can at least try to look them up.
Long live American manufacturing!
April 28, 2021 at 7:45 pm #237340Sierra Marine 18-2638 (Mercury/Force FK1065) Gearcase Seal Kit is listed as fitting 1997 and earlier 9.9 & 15hp Chrysler/Force motors. I can’t vouch for the reliability of the information. http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MERFK1065
