Johnson 20 hp of my Dad’s had not been run in years (10 plus). Took it out on a boat & starts fairly quick
but runs terrible at low speed. It stalls out, spits etc. High speed runs okWe cleaned out the carb. and & rebuilt with a kit. Now it won’t start and it back fires.
I figure we did something wrong and need to take the carb. off again. One thing we found was the plugs were L77J4 with the long reach. The electrodes
were smashed flat & you could see the where it was hitting the top of the piston.
We have No idea how those got in there, I can’t believe it ran. I thought that was the
problem, but after putting in some J6C’s…it still won’t startThe plug wires aren’t switched and there is still good blue spark…is there anything else that we might look at before we pull the
carb. off again?Thanks
October 3, 2015 at 2:21 pm #25047Squirt some pre mixed fuel directly into each cylinder, and rope it over… if it back fires, and you are gonna hate this, switch the plug wires and do it again. If that fixes the backfire then try to run it. I can’t think of any timing problems that might cause this, I can only say the only backfire issues I have ever had were from plugs crossed. Now that being said, what are the carb needle settings? You might be getting a lean sneeze and thinking it is a backfire..

October 3, 2015 at 2:28 pm #25049Had a motor that backfired then it would not start, turned out that when it backfired it sheared the flywheel key and through the timing off. New key and we were good to go. Maybe also a bad crank seal.

loosened the high speed nut and out came the gas.
I have the low speed set out at a 1 turn and a 1/4.Guess I have take it apart again
October 4, 2015 at 12:04 am #25084Did you remove the high speed jet when you cleaned the carb? Fuel might be flowing into the carburetor bowl, but might not be getting through the high speed jet.

Those plugs didn’t crack the pistons did they?Member of the MOB chapter.

It’s got great compression. But I still don’t get the slightest indication that it’s trying to catch when I crank it with the rope.
If I squirt pre-mix directly in the cylinders…varoom!I’m really scratching my head on this one.
October 7, 2015 at 1:11 am #25255When you rebuilt the carb, did you change the float pin/seat? I had a motor act this way and the float pin was stuck shut.
October 8, 2015 at 3:24 pm #25301OK, you had the carb apart and you removed the high speed jet, all is clean.
The motor won’t run unless you prime the cylinders with fuel, then only for a few seconds.
Fuel runs from the carb when you remove the bowl drain plug and pump the fuel line, correct?
How about the carb throttle linkage, perhaps the butterfly is stuck open somewhat. I’m pretty sure the choke linkage on that engine holds the butterfly open a bit to help start a cold engine. So, if the butterfly is stuck, or the choke linkage is messed up, this might explain the no start. The engine starts when primed, but then cuts out/spits/backfires because the throttle linkage is stuck open somewhat.
I’m assuming no major work was done to the engine (other than the carb) since the engine was last run many years ago, no one has messed around with the intake manifold have they?
You might try opening up the low speed needle another turn just to help get it started and keep running, then you can dial it in once the engine will keep running for you. -
