hey Friends, quick question.. What is the difference between Johnson/Evinrude Lower Gearcase oil.. Comes in a toothpaste looking tube.. And 80/90w lower gearcase oil?

As far as I know of the only difference is the printing on the outside of the tube. Marketing

Marine grade gear oils have special additives in them to prevent foaming and emulsifiers to suspend any water and still allow the oil to do its job with a certain amount of water mixed in. Automotive gear oils don’t. They might have a higher zinc content to. Not sure.

You will find it’s much cheaper per ounce if you buy it in a quart or gallon bottle – you will need to buy the small pump for about $5 to pump it in with. I use a lot of it, so I buy Sierra Premium outboard gear oil in a 5 gallon pail. If your 6 HP is the only motor you are running, then the tube probably makes sense

FYI: For those interested in recycling, unless it’s got a lot of water mixed with it (milky looking) I put old , drained gear oil in a gallon jug so anything bad settles out and use it for chainsaw chain oil – works great!

ok, that makes sense. I was wondering about that cost and convenience. The Tubes just say Marine Grease, they don’t say the weight. Thank you

If they say “grease” they are not 80W90 gear oil, they are a thick grease. They are thick grease intended for older outboards without a gearshift – do NOT use that in your 6 Evinrude!
