I picked up a nice original 1966 evinrude 40 “super quiet” to replace my loud 1990’s evinrude 25.  I remember these motors from back in the day and they were the quietest engines out there.  I finally got the engine onto the boat and I noticed that that the exhaust is very loud.  almost like it is a straight pipe out the back.  the water is pumping and cooling the exhaust.    The rubber compression hose inside the aft half of the lower unit cover is intact and seemed OK when i removed the cover to change the water pump.  the engine is a long shaft and the lower extra cover is not real tight but i don’t think that is the source of the noise.

Does anyone with experience with these wonderful engines have an idea why the exhaust would seem so loud?  Is there supposed to be damping material (stainless steel wool) inside the rubber hose?  Mine is wide open.

hmmm.   Not the most experienced with these engines, but will try to help.  No, there is no type of insulation around the rubber exhaust/water relief hose.  Does it look like this engine has been altered in any way?  Perhaps someone converted it from short to long shaft?  Does the powerhead look original?  These engines were very quiet, a little louder when first started cold until the inner exhaust got “wet down”, but still not loud at all.

You have looked at the donut gasket around the midsection, and that is OK.   Is there any evidence of an exhaust leak with the engine cover removed?  It just seems like an exhaust leak big enough to cause alot of exhaust noise should be evident.  I am assuming you are running the engine on a boat in the water, and not on a flushette or in a shallow bucket as well.

Feel free to post pictures or links to pictures if they won’t fit here…

No insulation around the outside of that hose or inside it either….

A lot of noise comes back out the carb throat that you will hear with the cover off or the access door open, as there is no muffler on the carb intake like the 1957-58  35s had.

I had a 1958  35 HP (not the super quiet one) get really noisy (like a straight pipe) when the exhaust housing cracked just below the water outlet and twisted slightly, opening up a crack about 1/4 inch wide, but you would have found that when you took off the exhaust housing cover.

Let us know what you find.  I have several 1960s Super Quiet 40s, and none are very noisy.

thanks for the replies.  The motor had been converted to a long shaft before I bought it.  the two piece lower housing is installed.  It does fit kind of loose at the top and bubbles come out at idle.  I stuffed duct seal in and around this joint the other day and it did no reduce the noise at all.

When looking down at the rubber expansion hose, it looks fine.  when i had the rear cover off it looked fine, but i wasn’t looking for anything back then, just changing the water pump.  the noise does seem to come from that outlet. There are two small, 1/4″ holes below the main outlet.  I put my hand over those and there was no change in sound.   it is slightly quieter when the water starts coming out, but like glass packs on a car engine, it really barks when you give it throttle.

the upper cover is doing a great job blocking the intake and general engine noises.

I will be taking the boat out soon and putting the 25 back on.  If there is anything that you would suggest i do before for testing or after for investigation thank you in advance for any help.

So, the extension housing fits “loosely” onto the exhaust housing?  What does that mean?  Seems like a great place for an exhaust leak.  You need to figure out why the extension fits “loosely”, that can lead to other problems down the road…  Post pictures/video if that will help.
