I reaquired this outboard after it being gone 5 or 6 years. I folded it and looked at the coupler. The coupler is good but it fell out when I opened it. Then I remember ( long time back ) the coupler always fell out. I had trouble opening it back then, and broke the coupler. Now my brain starts working, I have had 4 Johnson folders the last couple of years and the couplers never fell out. I put it back together and guess what? It won’t open. Not to smart. 😕 I have looked at drawings etc but can’t figure what is wrong or how to get it open without breaking it again. Then how to assemble it correctly. /size]

If the coupler is properly installed, it should never ‘fall out’. The spring that loads the coupler should provide enough ‘give’ to open and close the fold without any snags. From what I can find on MEngine, the parts diagrams don’t show the lower driveshaft used on the folders.

I have been looking at the diagram on MEngine, but for the life of me and can’t figure anything out. I am going to try a couple of things to get it open again.

Don’t know how useful this picture is, but it’s the top pf the lower driveshaft with the coupler installed. It’s pinned in place.

If the pin that goes thru the lower driveshaft is broken it may be hard to see. You might just have to drop the lower unit, no biggie.

That is what I needed to see. If I can get it open now, I can fix it. Thanks.

Don’t try to unfold it, just drop the lower unit..

It’s fixed. There was a keeper of some sort missing. The coupler is pushed down against the spring, then a snap ring ( keeper ) placed between the pin and the lip on the coupler. The snap ring seemed to be the easy fix not have the original. Works good now 😉

AWright, Hugh ! One in a row ! It is kinda a screwy little setup, seems to have lots of potential for migraines…
