Has this engine been used in salt water?  If so, there are few small water passages that get plugged up.  But, like others have mentioned, these engines tend to run hot, especially near the exhaust cover which is not water cooled.

Was the defective carb kit and OEM or aftermarket piece?

Unsure of where it was last run. However, the Carb kit was OEM unfortunately, I was able to get them to send another, which worked.

OK, well how did the pump look when you pulled it apart, any signs of salt build up?  And once again, these engines run fairly warm/hot, what you are seeing may be normal.  The exhaust cover and cylinder head will get hot, but the water passage on the right side of the powerhead should be only “warm”.  Engine temp is usually measured at the ID core plug on the RHS of the powerhead.

Tell us how you are determining the engine is running hot.  I just don’t want you to go nuts on this thing if nothing is really wrong.  Is a fine mist of water spraying from those little exhaust relief holes?
