My brother-in-law is trying to replace oil seals on his 1970 Evinrude and the old one slides right on and off but the new one seems to need some aggressive help. Is this expected?
Thanks

forgot to include….prop shaft. Definitely expected tighter but he was surprised at just how tight. Is so tight he needs to use a PVC pipe or similar to put over the shaft and bang it into place?

May 26, 2022 at 12:47 pm #260508Invest in a cheap set of digital calipers and measure the seal inside diameter and compare with the crank. Then measure outside diameter of seal and inside of where it sits in the case. Then measure the depth (thickness). 🙂

May 26, 2022 at 3:01 pm #260514OK, well that seal should not have just “slipped out of there”, trying to remove these things is usually a big battle. Do you have the gearcase apart, or did you remove the seal with the gearcase assembled? The correct OEM part number for the prop shaft seal is: 313282 and it should take some effort to drive it in place. Be very careful, those prop shaft bushing/carriers are very delicate and break easily.
That being said, the design of these seals/bushing has changed over the years, so be sure you actually have a 1970 6hp. Does it look like the original gearcase? Perhaps someone had it apart before and has mixed/matched parts in there.

A piece of PVC pipe and some persuasion and I understand he was able to get it installed perfectly
