Hello. This is my first post. Today I bought a 1971 Chrysler 8hp. It was 59 euro. It starts off the flywheel and us a bit smokey but still runs. The problem I have is that the steering seems locked. The engine lift mechanism works. There is just no right or left movement with the tiller. Any suggestions as to where to start to try and sort this out? Thanks RJ.

July 17, 2016 at 10:53 pm #40409The problem is corrosion inside and outside the two nylon bushings #39. That is causing #44 King pin to be seized in #43 swivel bracket. You could get it very hot with a torch to melt the bushings, but that is no fix. It has to come apart and be cleaned and re-lubricated.
This is not the exact picture for an 8hp, but should give you an idea of what you are looking forward to.
BTW, where is the recoil starter? That could be a problem unless you want to rope it.

Good Luck with it.Steve A W

I live in Northwest IndianaJuly 18, 2016 at 6:04 am #40431Thanks for the diagram. I also bought the manual online for $15. I will try and take it apart. Any suggestions for where I could find parts? I will have to put a budget cap on this project so it doesn’t run into daft negative equity.
I have the recoil starter separately it’s currently not fitted. I’m not sure if that works, but it looks mostly intact but it only starts off the fly wheel at the moment. I checked the oil in the gear case at the bottom, quite clean looking in there but devoid of any oil.
Why purple- who knows- but it’s flaking off so easy enough to clean off.
Best, R.

I’ve known a few guys that painted their motors butt-ugly to prevent being stolen.
July 18, 2016 at 9:39 pm #40471You were right about where it has seizure on the king pin. I’ve tried heating it and wrestled with a bar through the holes at the end of the king pin to try and force it to turn. No joy . It’s seized solid. So has the friction bolt to adjust the turning tension. I tried the blow torch on that as well, to try and loosen, but again no luck. I put a good squirt of WD40 on everything and I’ll try again tomorrow, if no luck then I’ll abandon ship I think. Anyone want to by mostly purple busted 1971 8HP Chrysler?

WD40 is just a mild lubricant, you need a penetrating oil such as Kroil or PB Blaster.
It will creep into the joint and hopefully break it loose.

I live in Northwest IndianaJuly 19, 2016 at 6:57 am #40496I’ve never heard of those products here, but I’ll see if I can find something better than WD40, thanks for the advice. There is a greasing nipple on the back of the shaft sleeve, I took that off and got some oil in there, but if I can get a better lubricant and squirt it in there that might help. I haven’t given up yet. It would be a shame to junk it as the engine does actually run.
July 19, 2016 at 10:41 am #40498I read soaking in diesel or a diesel petrol mix can be a good way to unseize stuff like this. Is a specific unseizing product better?
