looking at this 71 Johnson 100hp, 100ESL71A. It has the electric shift but nothing electrical is hooked up. Prop is locked, not sure if this is normal if it was last put in gear or what. I set the throttle pointer on the motor to start position. OK, I can turn the flywheel counter clockwise all day long, when I go to turn it clockwise it will not make a complete revolution, turns and just stops, locks. Why?? think’n about buying it but just check’n it out. What are your thoughts?
thanks for any info on this.

OK, that is not "Electric Shift", it is "Hydro-Electric Shift" It shifts by hydraulic pressure from an oil pump in the lower unit. The Electric part only operates a pair of valves that direct the hydraulic oil flow. All this to say that if the motor is not running, the oil pump is not pumping, and it defaults to forward gear. In other words, it is always in forward gear if not running. So the prop is in gear and won’t turn (very far).

But only able to turn the flywheel one direction is another matter. That is not normal and requires some more serious diagnosis.

Well, I commend your sense of adventure, but I don’t think I would pay much for this engine. Remember, it is useless without a decent control box with the proper wiring harness. You will pay dearly for a new shift switch or power pack.
Don’t know what to tell you about the rotational issue, could be just about anything from simple to disastrous….
Again, I would not pay much for this engine…

I agree, that thing can be a real money pit. Don’t buy it unless you get it so obscenely cheap that you can e-bay the parts off it if it turns out to be a junker. 50 bucks???
