Hello all, My son purchased a nice running 1971 Merc 200 20hp, When you fill the gear case oil it leaks out of the water intake? Any suggestions? Possible shift shaft or driveshaft seal. I have good knowledge of OMC motors but never worked on Merc. Thank you in advance Dave Hershey PA

Sounds like the prop shaft seal behind the water pump cartridge is bad. Need to pull the cartridge out to replace seal. If not familiar with this engine it can be a challenge. If the drive shaft seal shows signs of leaking that also needs to be replaced. Hope the seals have not worn grooves in the shafts.

See link for the setup and click on Gear Housing Assembly page 1 and 2

Note: I am not sure if the 1971 Merc 200 uses gear oil or grease in the gear case. If it needs grease oil will usually have leakage. The usual grease used for units that use grease is Luberplate 105 but if grease is required I would use John Deere Corn Head grease available at John Deere dealer or farm tractor supply.

BUT find out what belongs in the gear case and try it before you pull it apart it might OK. If gear oil is required the gear case needs the seals replaced.

Once fixed keep an eye on the gear case to make sure water is not getting in and service it regular.

In theory, the oil should come out of the oil vent screw hole before it gets up to the water pump base, so I hope your gear housing is not cracked from freeze damage. Are you sure it’s coming out of the water intake or the drain hole that’s just in front of the intake? I guess that, if the drive shaft seal (and probably the drive shaft surface) are bad, and you really power the oil in, it could come out the intake, that way. I’d pull the gear case off, remove the water pump and pump base, and have a look. Something definitely needs attention before the motor is put on a boat, that’s for sure.

the original drive shaft was steel the replacement was stainless because the steel rusts the oxide is harder than the steel surface and cuts it beyond repair a speedy sleeve can also be used to resurface the seal areas if the water pump and key still fit on the shaft snugly

Pretty sure (as I recall) that motor needs 90 oil in the gearcase as it is a shifting gearcase…

had one of those 20hp that punched a hole in the side of the powerhead… back in the early 80’s

silly me I gave it away as a piece motor … should have fixed it… I certainly would today
