Has new carb kit cam and throttle in sync.Lots of spark did compression test 65 psi both cylinders. Will start on maybe 15-20 pulls Lots of fuel in carb will run ok for a while half open and will idle down and just stop. Primer bulb is still hard but have to choke and pull till skin off finger. Now wearing glove. Maybe low compression have not checked head gasket. Thanks for any help. Russ

July 22, 2021 at 8:26 pm #243471First thing you need to do is stop pulling that rope. If it isn’t running after 3 or 4 pulls, there is something wrong with the motor or your procedure.. Stop pulling and start troubleshooting.
July 23, 2021 at 4:03 am #243482Motor is a 6hp.
July 23, 2021 at 5:49 am #243483A six hp OMC is maybe the best-running outboard engine ever built. Don’t waste your time pulling. If you keep pulling like that, you’ll be having to fix the recoil, too. How many times did people bring us an engine to fix the recoil, when the original problem was, it started poorly or not at all….65 psi compression seems a bit low but I am not entirely sure what it should be. Hopefully somebody here does know.
Long live American manufacturing!
July 23, 2021 at 9:01 am #243488Starts hard and hardly runs once started…. 65PSI does seem a bit low for this engine, but could just be the gage….Start with all the basics before ripping into this. Good spark? Fresh fuel/oil supply?? Are you sure there is no water in the fuel supply? Where is the low speed needle set? Initial setting is 1.5 turns out from gently seated. Is the choke linkage working properly, is the choke valve closing fully? Have you changed the plugs? Just cuz they are new doesn’t mean they are good.. Is the engine stiff/hard to turn over? Have you changed/inspected the gear lube? Most 6hps don’t use the pesky drive shaft shock, but the gearcase could be stiff anyway….
If everything checks out OK, and you can confirm the compression readings with another gage, then it might be time to pull the head, perhaps the gasket is blown between the two cylinders…
What is the history of this engine? Is it new to you? Has it ever worked properly since you owned it?July 23, 2021 at 9:05 am #243489high speed nozzle cleaned out with a wire and base gasket in place ??
what about top LS drip chamber and that really small orifice in the side channel feeding fuel the top drip chamber
did you carb clean and blow out all sections HS jet cleaned out ?
do you feel air sucked in the carb (get a friend to pull the cord while you put your closed fingers in front of the carb)
carb vent open ? carb gasket in place
my 9.5 works fine at 65 psi…work on the carb how was the engine running before the new kit ??

July 23, 2021 at 11:40 am #243495The low speed is set at 1.5. Motor is new to me.Needs new clutch dog.Got it started and before I took my hand off shifter no forward gear.Had to hold it in place.Have to oull things seee what is going on in lower end and carb. Thanks all for your help.Russ…
July 23, 2021 at 11:49 am #243499Pull the flywheel and see if the coils are cracked. While you’re in there, the points should be cleaned, polished, and gapped to 0.020″. Also a good time to change out the 580321 condensers as they go bad over time.
July 23, 2021 at 1:22 pm #243510Sorry all that replied the motor is a 1978 6hp. Clued in when crosbyman said high speed needle. Doing to much at one time.Agan sorry for my mistake. Russ…
